While we wish we could use one of the many helpful spells in Harry Potter to obliviate the coronavirus, we’re faced with another week of remote schooling and filling up their days after they finish their required work. You’ve already got them playing board games, working on puzzles, watching Netflix and reading. Whether they’re on their best behavior or you need to keep them occupied while you take an important conference call, this Harry Potter virtual escape room will test their wizarding skills.

Created by the Sydney Krawiec, a youth services librarian at Peters Township Public Library in McMurray, PA, this challenge can be completed as an individual or as a family. Your kids can even compete with their friends.

To start, enter the Hogwarts Digital Escape Room via a Google Doc form, where your first-year Hogwarts students will be prompted to answer questions within the Harry Potter world—without magic! They’ll use photos, videos and links to solve the puzzles and escape their house’s common room. Questions range from how many times “Harry” and “Potter” are spoken in a video to using wand motions to open a door.

Once your kids have finally escaped their common room, they can fill out a survey and leave feedback on the experience. Then, they can view the accuracy of their answers and compare with friends.

If your Harry Potter fans want more, try downloading one of these apps that’ll take them into the wizarding world—no broom required!
