The Jersey Shore BlueClaws are giving you a chance to show off your Jersey pride this season.
During three Minor League Baseball games, the BlueClaws will rebrand as the Jersey Shore Locals and play against the Hudson Valley Renegades, who will rebrand as The Bennys.
The Locals’ logo is a puffer fish on a paddleboard. The Bennys‘ logo is a pigeon on his way to the beach with a large cooler, socks with sandals, a fanny pack, and a “JS” tourist-style T-shirt featuring a map of New Jersey.
There are several legends as to where the word “Benny” came from. One is that it stands for Bayonne, Elizabeth, Newark and New York, whose residents took the train to vacation down the Shore. Another theory comes from the $100 bills, featuring Ben Franklin, that visitors spent during their vacations. A third plays off of a beach trip being “beneficial.”
No matter which side of the state you’re on, you can support both teams when their jerseys are auctioned off around the final game of the series in August. Proceeds will be split between BlueClaws charities, in support of Jersey Shore-based organizations through their grant program, and a charity selected by the Hudson Valley Renegades, to support their local community.
The games are a way to promote tourism in the state, which generates tens of billions of dollars each year, according to Bob McLane, general manager of the BlueClaws.
Opening Night at the Jersey Shore is set for Tuesday, April 8, and tickets to Opening Night and all 2025 home games are on sale at BlueClaws.com. Locals vs. Bennys game dates are Friday, June 20; Saturday, July 19; and Thursday, August 21. Fireworks will follow all three games. FirstEnergy Park is located at 2 Stadium Way in Lakewood.
