We Were Among the First to Ride Six Flags’ THE FLASH Coaster—Here’s Our Review!

Get on line to ride the only super boomerang coaster in North America

SIX FLAGS GREAT ADVENTURE / THE FLASH: Vertical Velocity

Six Flags Great Adventure Resort is breaking records again – this time, debuting North America’s first super boomerang coaster, and only the second in the world! – and we had a chance to ride it before it officially opens.

See our sneak peek of the ride on our Instagram page.

THE FLASH™: Vertical Velocity has seven high-speed launches, which shoot you around at up to 60 mph; but the coaster slows down at points on its four inverted curves so that you’re “hanging” upside down for 3 seconds at a time. You spring forwards and backward along the route, sometimes not knowing if you’re climbing one of two vertical towers (which is 172 feet at its max), slingshotting back down, or hitting the curves!

The brave coaster lovers in our group said it wasn’t too intense from the back seats – but that the front rows give you a different experience, where you “feel” the ride even more. You don’t feel the drops, but you will feel like you’re stuck in the air during the suspended parts of the ride. The ride itself feels like it moves slowly, but it’s really about a 60-second total ride.

To compare it to other coasters in the park, some riders said it felt a bit like Nitro, with less of a falling feeling than Skull Mountain. You must be 48 inches tall to ride, so even young thrillseekers can take the challenge.

THE FLASH will debut to the public when the park opens for the season on Saturday. During our visit, we saw test runs of the Ferris Wheel and Superman: The Ride, too.

Fans are missing Kingda Ka, Twister and the parachutes, which were demolished a few weeks ago in favor of another new roller coaster.

But there are exciting updates planned for the 2025 season. A new Build-a-Bear Workshop is coming to the entrance of the theme park. Jeremy Hacker is taking over as the park’s first executive chef, and revamped the menu at Granny’s Chicken and Savannah Sunset.

Special events are planned, including Star-Spangled Nights on July 4 and 5, Summerbration from July 4 to August 17, Fright Fest on select nights from September 12 to November 2, Oktoberfest and Kids Boo Fest on weekends from September 13 to November 2, and Holiday in the Park on select nights from November 22 through January 4, 2026.

Six Flags Great Adventure officially opens for the season on March 29, with limited dates through May 22 when the park opens for the full season. The park will also be open daily from April 12 to 21 during Spring Break.

Keep an eye out for season opening dates for Hurricane Harbor, The Savannah Sunset Resort & Spa, and the Wild Safari Base Camp.
