Animal lovers who come to the Philadelphia Zoo for its 1,900 wild creatures will be treated to gorgeous topiaries this year as part of a garden redesign inside America’s first zoo.
Five giant, 3D topiaries in the shapes of giraffes, a peacock, a butterfly, a snail and fish will be on display through October. Created by Santoline Mosaïculture, Zootopiaries: Nature’s Sculptures are made from 22 species of plants made to look like fur, scales and shells.
This is the first part of an overall garden redesign with the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society. The collaboration includes recreating four areas of the 42 acres of gardens inside the zoo. This month, by the Elephant and Calf statue near the main entrance, the garden bed will feature bright and colorful pollinator plants like prairie coneflower and butterfly weed; plus more than 18 large planters next to the zoo’s new Flamingo Cove.
The plants will change for the fall, and include autumn flowers near the PZ SEPTA Express Train kids ride near the Backyard Kitchen.
The Philadelphia Zoo is located located at 3400 W. Girard Ave., Philadelphia, PA. It is open daily from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., with the final entry at 4 p.m. Parking is available in an adjacent garage.
