Father’s Day is Sunday, which is the perfect time to show gratitude for the Dads in our lives. As Dads play a more active role in parenting than ever before, WalletHub took a look at work-life balance for fathers and named New Jersey the fifth-best state in the country for working dads.
According to the study, 93.7 percent of married fathers worked last year, compared to 71.1 percent of married moms. In 1960, 75 percent of American families relied on a single income, that of the dad, who spent much of his week at work while mom stayed home with the kids. In recent years, a lot of dads have switched to working from home, according to the study, and therefore have taken on more responsibilities raising the family.
WalletHub compared the 50 U.S. states and the District of Columbia across 23 key indicators of friendliness toward working dads. The data set ranges from parental leave policies to school system quality to health and wellness factors.
The rankings range from No. 1 being the best to No. 25 being average. In NJ, dads placed:
–8th on the scale of childcare costs adjusted for median family income (referring to families with kids up to age 17 in which the dad is present)
–15th for the average length of the work day, in hours, for men
–16th for daycare quality
–18th for male life expectancy
–18th in terms of the percentage of kids younger than 18 who have a dad present but who are living in poverty
–23th for males being uninsured
–25th for the percentage of physically active men
The top 10 states for working dads are:
1. Massachusetts
2. District of Columbia
3. Connecticut
4. Minnesota
5. New Jersey
6. Rhode Island
7. Wisconsin
8. New Hampshire
