DAN RICHER, CHEF & OWNER, RAZZA

New Jersey is known for its awesome selection of pizzerias, but one restaurant keeps taking the cake – or slice – as one of the best in the world.

Dan Richer of Razza Pizza Artigianale in Jersey City ranked No. 22 on The Best Pizza 2025 awards list from The Best Chef Pizza. He placed 16th in 2024 and 8th in 2023.

Richer is a six-time James Beard Award nominee and the author of The Joy of Pizza: Everything You Need to Know. He’s originally from Matawan, and is a Rutgers grad who skipped his graduation ceremony to go to Italy. He opened Razza in 2007 with a focus on using local flour, milk and butter as his key ingredients.

The Best Pizza Awards is run by The Best Chef Awards, and works behind the scenes to put pizza and its traditions first, honoring pizza “storytellers” who truly hone their craft, according to the methodology behind the voting. According to Richer’s writeup, his pies are so good because he uses a meticulous 60-point rubric to analyze his pizza on the basis of agriculture and chemistry. He studies everything from dough structure and flavor balance to the physics of heat and of course, the taste. The writers call him a craftsman, philosopher and educator.

Razza is the only pizzeria in the U.S. to earn a three-star review from The New York Times (and was named to its list of the 22 Best Pizza Places in the U.S. last year). Razza also got a high 8.1 rating by pizza aficionado Dave Portnoy of Barstool Sports, and was named No. 11 in the world by an Italian pizza site in 2023. Just this week, Razza was named one of the 50 Best Pizzerias in the World according to Top 50 Pizza.

Aside from unique selections like the East Coast Margherita, Project Hazelnut and Pea Pie, you can order bread and butter with caviar, meatballs with ricotta, chickpeas with parmigiano or a beet salad. There’s also a full beer, wine, cider and cocktail menu. Earlier this year, Razza added a limited-time spicy vodka vegan pie to its menu.

Razza Pizza Artigianale is located at 275 Grove St. in Jersey City. The line can wrap around the block during busy times, so it’s best to make a reservation.
