High school students focus so much on college acceptance rates to get into their dream schools but another metric that matters is how many find a job in their field after college.

Career.io, a career platform, surveyed Gen Zers to see which university they hope to attend, and then which company they’d like to work for after graduation. The goal was to uncover the combinations of education and employment that college students think are most lucrative and rewarding for a career.

Of the 3,018 people ages 18 to 25 who were surveyed, three New Jersey university-company pairings made the list.

  1. Princeton University / Johnson & Johnson
  2. Rutgers University / Merck & Co.
  3. Stevens Institute of Technology / Prudential Financial

The analysis is based on cutting-edge education at a school transferring to a prestigious career in the health (medical, pharmaceutical, research) and finance industries. For New Jersey particularly, there is a huge push toward life sciences, technology and science.

Choices from other states include:

  • Stanford University / Google
  • Harvard University / Boston Consulting Group
  • Columbia University / Goldman Sachs

The survey also determined that opportunities for internships and work experience through college are important; and that relocating to go to a top-notch university can be key.

The survey showed that a high-level degree is important, but work ethic and adaptability are just as crucial to predict long-term success, while leadership skills and the ability to network help as well.

College aged students also chose these particular companies because of job security and growth potential. About half of the respondents think launching their career in a big city is worth the cost of living there if it affords them better opportunities.
