Alexa, Siri, ChatGPT … there are different forms of artificial intelligence all around us, and the expectation is that it will be far more widely used in the future.
More and more, colleges and universities throughout New Jersey (and the country) are offering degrees in AI. Kean University just introduced two new programs: a Ph.D. in Computer Science and a Bachelor of Science in Artificial Intelligence.
The proposed Ph.D. program would concentrate on artificial intelligence, cybersecurity and data science. The bachelor program would launch with 25 students, preparing graduates for leadership roles across industry, academia and government sectors.
The program is designed to prepare students for the rapidly expanding global AI market, projected to reach $407 billion by 2027, and supports AI education and workforce development in New Jersey, aligned with Governor Murphy’s AI initiatives to encourage AI innovation and investment, according to information provided by Kean University.
“In proposing these programs, we are doing more than meeting current demand – we’re laying the groundwork for a universitywide integration of AI education,” says David Birdsell, Ph.D., provost and senior vice president for academic affairs. “This comprehensive approach ensures our students are prepared for today’s challenges and equipped to lead tomorrow’s innovations.”
The AI program should start in Fall 2025 with the Ph.D. program coming the following academic year.
Other schools have implemented similar programs. Stevens Institute of Technology has a highly rated Master’s in Applied Artificial Intelligence offered on campus and online.
NJIT’s Master of Science in AI combines data science, machine learning and computer engineering. Some careers that could use this AI education include software engineers and pharmaceutical data analysts.
New Jersey City University offers an AI Machine Learning Boot Camp, a six-month comprehensive training course of 300 hours of self-paced training. It’s based on Python and ML in preparation for the Microsoft Azure AI Engineer Certification Exam.
The School of STEM at Ocean County College focuses on AI as part of computer science, keying in on topics like how your iPhone recognizes faces that are tagged in photos, how a digital assistant understands and answers you, and even how antibiotics can kill antibiotic-resistant bacteria.
Cornell University in New York offers an online certificate in Generative AI, with subsections such as designing and building AI solutions, marketing, strategy and healthcare implications.
