Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst is generally open to members of the military, but the public will get rare access during the Power in the Pines airshow coming in May.

The theme for this year is “Joint Warfighters: Honor. Inspire. Innovate.” You’ll see the incredible flying skills of some of the world’s top pilots. This is the first time in two years the open house and festival will be held on the base.

Look high into the sky for the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds and their F-16 Fighting Falcons. You’ll have a unique opportunity to see a low-level aerial refueling flight for the C-17 and KC-46, two planes assigned to JB MDL. There will be other aerial demonstrations by both modern and heritage aircraft.

Back on the ground, there will be food, displays and more activities for the fam.

Home to the former McGuire Air Force Base, Fort Dix Army Installation, and Lakehurst Naval Air Engineering Station, the base is overseen by the U.S. Department of Defense for military programs and veteran services.

Power in the Pines is set for May 17 and 18 at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst; use 2901 Falcon Lane, Pointville, for map directions. For routes and up-to-date traffic information, check the website and Facebook event page.

Gates open at 9 am each day, and it’s a good idea to arrive early because the gates will close once capacity is reached. You should expect a 60- to 90-minute wait to get into the festival. The airshow starts in the afternoon, probably around noon, depending on the weather. In case you don’t make it in, you can livestream the event.

General admission is free and is available at the gate; or you can purchase premium seating or the VIP Flight Line Club experience online in advance. This is a cashless event.
