When we think of the waterfront, we tend to think of the Jersey Shore – but New Jersey’s most underrated town, according to Love Exploring, lies along a different coastline.
Love Exploring named Frenchtown, which sits along the Delaware River, as a must-visit spot because of its quaint, European charm that dates back to the 19th century.
There are quaint cafés, coffee shops, art galleries and markets in its downtown. The Frenchtown Inn is now Finnbar, and it serves a seasonal, produce-driven, locally sourced menu of Italian- and Mediterranean-inspired dishes. The Bridge Café is a popular restaurant and bakery located inside the renovated Frenchtown train station.
The bucolic scenery is evident at Frenchtown Riding Club, where you can take a lesson or board your horse. Have a glass of wine on the beautiful grounds of Beneduce Vineyards, located a few miles away in Pittstown.
The ArtYard campus has four buildings close to the center of town that offer theater performances, music, film screenings, poetry, storytelling events, and the biennial Hatch and Aqualumina Festival. Studio Route 29 is an art studio for artists with intellectual and developmental disabilities. It also has a gallery. Schmidtberger Fine Art showcases the works of older painters through exhibits and pop-up shows. MFA Gallery, aka Modern Fossils, has a selection of juried shows and showcases. Roxey Ballet has its administrative offices in town (though performances take place in nearby New Hope).
The river is the perfect spot for canoeing, kayaking, tubing and rafting; or bike or walk across the Uhlerstown–Frenchtown Bridge, which is a free bridge over the Delaware that connects Frenchtown to Pennsylvania.
Frenchtown is an ideal day trip, but if you decide to make a weekend of it, stay at The National Hotel, which dates back to 1850 but has been renovated to have an uber-modern feel.
