Philadelphia Zoo Debuts Lemur Island and We’re Here For It

Other new additions include red-tailed monkeys, Humboldt penguin chicks and more.

LEMUR ISLAND / KORY AVERSA

There’s lots of cuteness happening at The Philadelphia Zoo this summer. Lemur Island is a new walk-through exhibit that takes you right up to the zoo’s family of ring-tailed and mongoose lemurs without any kind of barriers. The exhibit aims to help visitors gain an appreciation of this endangered species and to educate them on the importance of protecting them.

Part of the Philadelphia Zoo’s recent “baby boom,” the zoo welcomed the hatching of two Humboldt penguin chicks in late April. As the chicks grow bigger and stronger, they reside in a burrow that’s easily visible to visitors and will spend more time outside in the coming weeks.

Making its return to the Philadelphia Zoo for the first time since 1928 is the red-tailed monkey. Ten-year-old male Ahnmom and 5-year-old female Lulu can be seen inside their habitat at Monkey Junction.

RED-TAILED MONKEY LULU / THE PHILADELPHIA ZOO

On May 1, two Arapawa goat kids named Georgina and Lucas arrived at the zoo. Like the penguins, the pair is healthy and they continue to get stronger each day after their premature birth. The kids are currently in the birthing yard at KidZooU, where visitors can spot them. It’s believed that there are less than 500 of this breed left in the world. Georgina and Lucas will leave the zoo in the fall, so don’t miss your chance to see them this summer.

In other news, the SEPTA PZ Express Train will take guests on a new track that has been redesigned for a longer route. The zoo is open daily from 9:30 am to 5 pm. Advance online reservations are required for general admission, and tickets are available at philadelphiazoo.org.
