With temps expected to hit 100 degrees this week, New Jersey’s spraygrounds and splash pads will be the perfect place to take the kids to cool off. Be sure to call and/or check the website in advance for hours and openings before heading out.
Asbury Park Splash Park
Third Ave. Greenspace, Asbury Park
732-897-6538
This splash park features a cute garden theme with oversized hoses, sprinklers and watering cans. It’s right next to the beach and the boardwalk.
Dorbrook Recreation Area
353 County Rd. 537, Colts Neck
This huge park features hoses squirting from the ground, spigots dumping water from above and a host of water tables ensuring no one leaves dry. There are areas of play for everyone from infant to adult. You must register on weekends and holidays, with the season running from Memorial Day through Labor Day.
John C. Bartlett Jr. County Park at Berkeley Island
399 Brennan Concourse, Berkeley Twp.
This park gives probably the best view of the Barnegat Bay. It features a family-oriented spray park, playground, walking paths, small picnic areas, bait stations and more. The crabbing/fishing pier at the park is one of Ocean County’s most popular. Bring a picnic lunch and spend the day sunning, fishing or crabbing from the 100-foot pier.
Newport Green
14th St., Jersey City
The Newport Green spray park is open, plus there is a grassy outdoor space for you to take in the beautiful background views of NYC. There’s even a little beach with sand (complete with Adirondack chairs and umbrellas) that overlooks the Hudson River and a summertime carousel nearby.
Ponderosa Park
1600 Cooper Rd., Scotch Plains
Check out the three large play structures and water jets at this water spray park that’s made of padded rubber. Keep in mind: Shade is limited, so pack cover-ups in case it gets hot. There’s also a huge patch of grass for the kids to run wild.
Snyder Avenue Park
240 Snyder Ave., Berkeley Heights
908-464-0550
Nestled inside a playground, this small sprayground with a football theme includes a giant goal post that shoots out water (donated by the New York Jets).
