New Jerseyans are fascinated by sharks, mostly because more than 100 years ago, two people were attacked by sharks off the coast of Matawan, inspiring the movie “Jaws.” The movie is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year.
Then came Discovery Channel’s Shark Week, which brings underwater coverage to TV around the clock from July 20 to 26.

Adventure Aquarium in Camden wants in on the action, too, offering a deep dive into the fascinating world of sharks starting on July 20. The “Jaw-some Adventure” includes access to the Northeast’s largest collection of sharks through exhibits and interactive experiences.

A huge draw is the 81-foot suspended Shark Bridge, which lets you climb through ropes that hang right above a tank filled with sharks. Inside the Shark Tunnel you’ll see more of these predators, and be able to touch some of the more docile ones in the touch tank. Some of the species you will see include bamboo, nurse, Pacific blacktip reef and silky sharks.

You can snorkel with these amazing creatures through the Shark & Ray In-Water Encounter. You’ll be swimming just inches away from sandbar and sand tiger sharks inside a 550,000-gallon exhibit. The experience usually costs $149.99 per person, but next week is offered at a discount of $99.99.
You can also book a behind-the-scenes tour of the Shark Realm, and learn how aquarium staff take care of the sharks on exhibit. There is an additional cost of $19.99 for this tour.

Other free activities include shark chats, dive demos, the chance to see a rare great hammerhead up close, talks with real aquarists, and the ability to symbolically adopt a shark. You can download the app for more opportunities to learn about sharks.
During your visit, check out the brand-new Kaleidoscope Cove, which brought in more than 100 bioluminescent fish and sea animals in a neon exhibit.

Adventure Aquarium is located at 222 Riverside Dr. in Camden. The Jaw-some Adventure activities are available from July 21 to August 21. Visit the website for aquarium admission fees and to book the extra experiences.
