“I knew the record would stand until it was broken,” New York Yankees great Yogi Berra once said.

Well, a record stands to be broken when The Yogi Berra Museum & Learning Center hosts Yogi’s Big Catch Challenge, an official attempt at the Guinness World Record for the largest game of catch ever.

The Montclair museum, which celebrated Yogi’s 100th birthday with a party on May 12, announced that baseball fans of all ages can come out to the field on September 21 to take part in history. According to the rules, the record for the Largest Game of Catch (baseball/softball) requires a minimum of 973 pairs – or 1,946 players – playing catch simultaneously for five minutes. Pairs will be set up on the field and concourse in assigned positions, 9 feet 10 inches from each other. Don’t worry about your skills – it’s OK if you drop the ball.

To make a connection to history (ala the museum), this event takes place one day before Yogi played his first game in the Major Leagues in 1946 – and during that game he famously hit a home run! It was also the day before he passed away, ten years ago, in 2015.

The Yogi Berra Museum & Learning Center is located on the campus of Montclair State University. The address of Yogi Berra Stadium is 8 Yogi Berra Dr. in Little Falls. Tickets are $25 per pair or $15 per person, and $5 for anyone who wants to watch. Gates open at 11:30 am September 21, with a warmup on the field at 12:30 pm, and the record-setting attempt at 1 pm. After, there will be activities on the concourse until 5 pm, plus you can head into the museum for more fun baseball facts.
