This Central Jersey Mall is Getting a Makeover – Including a New Dave & Buster’s

Lidl is now open and a new House of Sport is on the way

Malls in New Jersey are known for their department stores, trendy shops and food courts (oh, how we miss Roli Boli’s stromboli) – but one shopping center is upping its game – literally – by adding an arcade, gym, sports complex and food market.

In recent years, the Freehold Raceway Mall has been revamping its mix of stores. The lower level of the former Sears is now a huge Dave & Buster’s entertainment complex, complete with arcade games, virtual reality, a huge sports bar, multiple restaurant seating areas and party rooms.

D&B has everything from Skee-Ball to air hockey tables to basketball hoop games to racing games in a 41,000-square-foot space. The ticket redemption space is stacked with fun prizes for the kids.

Dave & Busters is as much about the adults as it is the kids, with alcohol served, including their infamous test tube shots that resemble the name; and their signature Caribbean Lux Lit, Backwoods Blueberry Lemonade, Dangerous Waters Island Punch, and Perfect Pink Rita.

The menu’s got more than just bar bites. The cheese stick stack is like a mozzarella stick on steroids. The pretzel dog is a hot dog wrapped inside a soft pretzel. The smashed burger slider is cooked well done, so it’s crunchy. Entrée faves include chicken parm pasta, fish & chips, a 12-ounce ribeye and the Fuego Chicken Sandwich. There’s a selection of flatbreads too – the Double Pepped Up has more pepperoni slices than cheese. Dessert includes funnel cake fries and s’mores cheesecake.

Next door is the Freehold Athletic Club, which took over another portion of Sears. There is a 32,000-square-foot gym that includes group classes and a yoga studio, plus five pickleball courts, massage services, a chiropractor on site and a juice bar. A golf simulator package and deals for college students are coming soon. There’s a childcare center, too. The focus is on fitness + wellness, and it’s open from 4 am to midnight every day.

On the opposite side of the mall, construction is underway by Dick’s Sporting Goods for a  House of Sport, which is going to be a new destination for baseball, softball, football and golf players to enhance their skills. Taking over Lord & Taylor, expect a climbing wall, golf bays and batting cages among other yet-to-be announced features.

Until then, you can shop at Dick’s flagship store, or at Dick’s Going Going Gone, which has athleticwear and outwear at severely discounted prices.

To round out the new improvements, near the entrance to the complex along Route 537, Lidl opened another one of its supermarkets. The German food store feels like a mix of Aldi, Trader Joe’s and Sprouts. When you walk in, you’re hit with the smell of flowers and a fresh bakery; check their deals for BOGO or day-old leftovers for a discount.

The Freehold Raceway Mall complex is located at 3710 Rte. 9 South in Freehold Twp., with access off Route 537/Main Street.
