Everyone ignores the “Do Not Consume Raw Cookie Dough” warning on the package, because…cookie dough. It’s too good to pass up.
The well-known warning has been tied to the possibility of contracting salmonella from raw eggs in batter, but now there's a new reason to stay away from raw cookie dough: the flour.
There have been dozens of E. coli outbreaks due to tainted flour in recent months, linked to a General Mills facility in Kansas City, Mo. As of June 8, 42 separate cases of E. coli have been reported across 21 states, according to the Washington Post.
General Mills is investigating this issue and has issued a voluntary recall of 10 million pounds of flour, according to the FDA.
You can still enjoy pre-packaged cookie dough, just make sure you bake it before you eat it! When the dough is baked, the risk of E. coli is lowered because all harmful, disease-carrying bacteria are killed by the heat which makes it safe to eat. So the next time the kids ask for a scoop of the raw stuff, remind them that it’s better to be safe than sorry.
