If you have a high school senior who’s been looking forward to the prom and graduation, you’re among the many parents who’re feeling robbed of experiencing one of life’s biggest rites of passage with your son or daughter. The COVID-19 pandemic has also threatened college graduation ceremonies and dashed the hopes of families who had planned parties to celebrate. As communities find creative ways to recognize the class of 2020, Facebook announced today announced it will hold a virtual commencement for both high school and college seniors across the country.

The Facebook virtual commencement address for the country’s graduates will be given by Oprah Winfrey. Awkwafina, Jennifer Garner, Lil Nas X, Simone Biles and others will also share words of wisdom for the class of 2020 and Miley Cyrus will perform her song “The Climb.”

The hours-long virtual ceremony will acknowledge high schools and colleges in the US by name, state by state, and will include photos and videos of the class of 2020 along with messages from deans and principals across the country.  The virtual commencement video will be shared on Facebook Watch and available at facebook.com/facebookapp. Highlights and more will also be posted to the official @instagram account and will be shared on celebrity accounts as well.

On May 11, Instagram will kick off class of 2020 celebrations on its official account with daily posts that spotlight fun senior superlatives and experiences ranging from “most likely” votes to senior skip day. A graduation countdown sticker and a special hashtag page for #Graduation2020 will also be released. On May 15, the official commencement event kicks off at 2 pm eastern time on the Facebook Watch App.

Facebook and Instagram, via its stories, will also launch a graduation theme featuring a list of grad-related songs so you can find the perfect soundtrack to celebrate your grad. Graduates can also host their own virtual ceremony and party on Facebook using features like a virtual graduation hub, custom filters and celebrations for just your family and friends using a Messenger Room.
