
A new study shows that women who live in New Jersey are having children later in life. New Jersey has the second-oldest first-time moms, with a birth rate of 17 births per 1,000 women in the 40-44 age group.
Birth Injury Lawyers Group analyzed the latest birth rate data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to determine which state had the youngest and oldest new mothers. The U.S. average is 12 births per 1,000 women in the 40-44 age group. Jersey’s birth rate is 41.7 percent above the national average.
NJ is topped only by our neighbor, New York, which has the oldest new mothers on average, reporting a birth rate of 17.5 births per 1,000 women in the 40-44 age group. This is 45.8 percent above the national average birth rate for women in the 40-44 age group.
The states with the oldest new mothers on average:

3. Hawaii
4. California
5. Massachusetts
6. Maryland
7. Alaska and Connecticut (tied)
9. Virginia
10. Rhode Island
On the opposite end of the spectrum, the states with the youngest mothers were determined by the estimated birth rate of the combined 15-19-year-old age group, according to the most recent data calculated from 2021.
Arkansas has the youngest new mothers on average, with a birth rate of 26.5 births per 1,000 women in the 15-19 age group, nearly twice the national average.
Mississippi has the second youngest new mothers on average, with 25.6 births per 1,000 women in the 15-19 age group, while Louisiana is third, with 24.5 births per 1,000 women in the 15-19 age group.
