New Jersey Ranks High in its Pre-K Education, New Study Says

WalletHub ranked the Garden State among the ten best pre-K education programs in the country

New Jersey is always among the states with the best public schools and now a new ranking puts the Garden State among the nation’s best pre-K education programs. New Jersey ranked eighth on a list of 2024’s States With the Best Early Education Systems.

Personal finance website WalletHub compared the 50 states and the District of Columbia across 12 key metrics. The data set ranges from the share of school districts that offer a state pre-K program to the number of pre-K quality benchmarks met and total reported spending per child enrolled in pre-K.

New Jersey ranked in the following categories, with 1 being the best and 25 being average:
–8th: Overall Rank
–1st: Total reported spending per child enrolled in preschool
–1st: Monthly child care co-payment fees as a percent of family income
–3rd: Share of 3- and 4-year-olds enrolled in pre-K, pre-K special education and Head Start
–5th: Total state Head Start program spending per child enrolled in preschool
–29th: Income requirement for state pre-K eligibility

WalletHub also recently announced that New Jersey has the fourth-best school system overall in the country.

The States With the Best Early Education System in the U.S. for 2024, according to WalletHub, are:

  1. Arkansas
  2. District of Columbia
  3. Nebraska
  4. Maryland
  5. Oregon
  6. West Virginia
  7. South Carolina
  8. New Jersey
  9. Vermont
  10. Connecticut
