Public schools in New Jersey have always been among the best and a new study shows the Garden State ranking at #2 in the nation. U.S. News World & Report recently released its ranking of top high schools in the country, and New Jersey has 406 schools on the list, with 50 in the top 1,000. The New Jersey Department of Education also released its School Performance Report, and the 30 best public and charter schools in the state have an A+ ranking.

For this new study, educational resource site Teach Simple used data from sources including the National Center for Education Statistics and The Nation’s Report Card to analyze things like bullying rate, academic performance, and student-to-teacher ratio. Each factor was awarded a score of 10 to determine the ranking, with a max overall score of 100.

New Jersey had a cumulative score of 69.19 points, and scored 10 in multiple categories: the average standardized test scores in grade 8 are 269.78 for reading and 175.33 for writing, the rate of students being caught with a firearm at just 0.43%; and the public expenditure on student support, food services and transportation at $3,625 per pupil.

Massachusetts ranked No. 1 with an overall score of 71.54. The Tri-State Area took over the next spots: New Jersey, then Connecticut followed at No. 3 with 62.80 points, and New York in fourth with 62.31 points. In total, seven districts are located in the Northeast, including Maryland in fifth, Maine in seventh and Pennsylvania in ninth.

These are the Top 10 School Systems in the Country, according to Teach Simple:

  1. Massachusetts
  2. New Jersey
  3. Connecticut
  4. New York
  5. Maryland
  6. Iowa
  7. Maine
  8. Virginia
  9. Pennsylvania
  10. Wisconsin

A spokesperson from Teach Simple said: “The results of the study are undoubtedly reassuring for parents located in these top ten states, as they can have peace of mind knowing that their children are learning in an environment that will allow them to thrive, from strong pupil to teacher ratios to high ACT scores.”
