Nearly 45 percent of ice skating injuries occur in six- to 12-year-olds, according to the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS). Here’s how to keep them safe:

•  DO wear a helmet. 

• DON’T allow her to wear skates that are too loose. They can cause blisters and frostbite. Skates should provide plenty of ankle support. 

• DO keep an eye out for cracks, holes and debris on the ice.

• DON’T skate on an untested lake or pond. Ice on a body of water should be at least six inches thick to be considered safe. 

• DO teach her the basics of stopping and, most importantly, falling safely. Kids should always protect their limbs and heads when taking a tumble.
