Bridgewater Sports Arena
1425 Frontier Rd. Bridgewater
$7/adults, $6/kids; $3 skate rental
Come on Fridays for Family Night, when admission, skate rentals and 20 arcade tokens go for $12 a person. The ice is open to the public every day (except holidays), as are the Bridgewater Sports Arena’s other amusements, like the LaserZone (think laser tag meets capture the flag) and arcade that's packed with more than 65 games.
Clary Anderson Arena
41 Chestnut St., Montclair
$6 admission, $4 skate rental
Kids ages 4 and up can make the rounds every day of the week. Times vary by day, so check online before loading up the car. Weekend skate goes as late as 11 pm some nights! Stop by the cafe for anything from a breakfast sandwich to pizza. Then warm up with a hot cocoa.
111 Midtown Bridge Approach, Hackensack
$10 admission, $5 skate rental, $2 locker rental
Whether your kids are throwing triple axels or hanging onto the walls for dear life, they’re in the right place. Home to four NHL regulation-size rinks, this skating facility is the tri-state area’s largest. Go for a casual spin during public hours (Sat.-Sun. 1-5 pm; additional holiday times), or skate to the beat of DJ-spun tunes during Skate Jam on Friday nights from 9:30-11:30 pm. This spot’s figure skating program has produced multiple Olympic gold medalists, including Sarah Hughes, Tara Lipinski and Oksana Baiul.
Jersey Shore Arena
1215 Wyckoff Rd., Wall
$8 admission, $4 admission ages 5 and under, $4 skate rental
Your first trip to the Jersey Shore Arena will probably be for the daily public skating on one of three NHL regulation-size rinks. We’re guessing your second (and third and fourth) trip will be for what this spot does better than any other—DJ Skate. Every Friday and Saturday night from 7:45 to 10:30 pm, the masses hit the ice for a dance party on blades, complete with lights and the sounds of a live DJ ($10 admission, $4 rental). Need to give your legs a break? Step into the Penalty Box—home to a fully stocked arcade, laser tag and café.
95 River Dr., Jersey City
$7 admission, $6/rental
Newport Skates’ rink may not be the biggest in the state, but it definitely has a spectacular view! Located right on the Hudson River, it’s the perfect vantage point for some major NYC skyline ogling and Instagram-worthy pics with the fam. Just remember: This is an outdoor rink, so bundle up before heading out. Head there with a group of 8-24 skaters for reduced admission.
