As a mother, I’m always on the lookout for solutions that will help ease the space and storage issues that come with raising a large family. With five children and two adults living under one roof, you can imagine how something simple like shoe storage can get out of hand.

Around here we have a policy of no shoes in the house, which means the children promptly remove their shoes when coming through the door. And that, my friends, is the problem. The shoes are removed and left right where they stand, becoming a tripping hazard and, to be blunt, a nuisance.

While brainstorming solutions I decided to search the ideas of fellow Houzzers and was blown away by their ideas. You will be too. There are cubby wall units that dreams are made of, laundry baskets and modern shelves that are going to make you swoon. Let’s get started!

If you happen to be a type A personality, like me, you’re going to especially love these first few images.

Built-in storage is a dream and makes it possible to customize a space to exactly fit your needs. The shoe storage wall unit shown here is perfect for large families. Children’s shoes can be stored on the bottom shelves where they can be easily grabbed; adults can store theirs up high.

If you’re looking for even more order, try customizing your unit with cubby boxes. Your kids have probably already used cubbies in preschool, so they’ll understand right away how this new system works.

Not everyone likes to see shoes lined up on a shelf, and if you’re one of them, consider retrofitting a current closet with cubbies. This will offer you the same storage benefits while providing discreetness, thanks to the doors.

It’s not always possible or necessary to store every pair of shoes in one place. To keep the shoes of the day off the floor, a simple shelf like this one is a nice solution.

Or perhaps keeping a laundry basket under a bench near the door will remind your family to keep their shoes stowed.

A shoe tray by the entrance is also a nice solution, especially during those rainy or snowy months.

The sleek design of this shoe rack is sure to fit in if your home has a modern vibe.

If you have a garage that your family uses to enter and exit the home, consider placing your shoe storage out there. This works best for play shoes and muddy boots.
