Bojangles, the wildly popular Southern fave known for its fried chicken and biscuits, is opening its first New Jersey location tomorrow—and after getting a sneak peek, we totally get the hype.
The key is in the Southern home cooking. The chicken is hand-breaded, the biscuits are made from scratch, the sweet tea is steeped daily, and the ranch dipping sauce is housemade.
Let’s start with the biscuits! Each is made by a trained baker on-site. You can watch the pros through a window at the “Biscuit Theater” near the counter. Fun fact: 40 percent of the day’s business is done before 11 am, since their biscuit breakfast sandwiches are that good!
Because there’s a demand for boneless chicken, you won’t find any fried chicken wings here. Instead, no-bone chicken patties are used on the biscuit sandwiches – as are eggs, sausage and steak during breakfast hours (11 am to 2 pm). Chicken tenders, served all day, come in servings of 3, 4 or 5 strips. You can opt for a Bo’s Chicken Sandwich or grilled chicken, as well as the Bo’s House Garden Salad with fried or grilled chicken.
The chicken is so flavorful with a bit of a kick that you don’t need extra sauce, but if you like to dip, try the jalapeño ranch, creamy buffalo or peach honey pepper sauces.
Fixins, as they say in the South, are side dishes including a gooey mac & cheese, Dirty Rice (also made from scratch) with crumbled sausage, cole slaw not drowned in mayo, or seasoned fries.
Dessert biscuits are either made with blueberries and icing, or topped with a fresh “Darn Close to Grandma’s” peach compote; or sip on a vanilla, chocolate or Bo-Berry milkshake.

Kids can ask for a meal with chicken tenders or baked macaroni & cheese with a biscuit, fixin’ and milk. Although Bojangles is “unapologetically fried chicken,” vegetarians can opt for the biscuits, plain salads, cole slaw, mac & cheese, milkshakes and desserts.
The food is not greasy at all, and there are no microwaves on the premises. But a chef’s pro tip is reheating your chicken at home at 350 degrees in the oven for 10 minutes to crisp it up again.
Bojangles was founded in 1977 in Charlotte, North Carolina, and now has 820 restaurants in 20 states. The company has mostly been in the southeast, but opened with a new market concept in Florida, Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas and Las Vegas over the past three years. And there’s another NJ location coming to Route 35 in Neptune this summer.
You can head to the restaurant, order via the double drive-thru, or use the app (which has app-specific deals and a rewards program).
Bojangles is located at 1000 Stelton Rd. in Piscataway. The public opening is at 6 am on Wednesday, April 23.
