A spectacular new lights festival is set to open for the first time in New York City this holiday season, right next to Citi Field in Flushing, Queens. Integrating traditional Chinese artistry with technology, the Tianyu Lights Festival will light up the Big Apple from November 29 through January 12, 2025.
What Makes Tianyu Lights Festival So Special?
Picture this: Intricate light sculptures, vibrant displays, and a story that pulls you into a storybook adventure. Along the way, visitors will meet Koda, a 7-year-old who’s just back from a trip to the Amazon rainforest. His dreams and memories will blend into a fantastical world filled with luminous art installations. As you walk through the immersive experience, you’ll join Koda on a quest to piece together his dream fragments, solving clues and winning prizes along the way.
To create the experience, a group of Chinese lantern artisans and video game designers were commissioned to design and construct the installations, using steel, LED lights, and a variety of fabrics. Their goal? To craft the most immersive live gaming experience for visitors of all ages.
“We are thrilled to make our debut in New York City’s cultural epicenter during this year’s holiday season,” said Huiyuan Liu, event manager of Tianyu Arts & Culture. “Bringing our lights festival to New York City, a metropolitan renowned for its diverse cultures and communities, allows us to showcase traditional Chinese lanterns in a whole new light – our lantern installations are technologically advanced, have different layers of tech and innovations built into them, and are incredibly beautiful.”
Photo Ops, Performances and More
The elaborate light sculptures (think giant glowing flowers, whimsical animals, and intricate lantern designs) offer stunning backdrops for pics. The festival also features live performances of traditional Chinese music and peacock dances. The Forest Food Court will serve up food and drinks. The Magical Forest Marketplace will have handcrafted goodies, like panda-themed crafts and light-up paintings, for sale.
The festival runs from November 29 through January 12, 2025, and will be open daily from 5-10 pm, with the last entry at 9 pm. It will be closed on a few select dates (Dec. 9, Dec. 16, Dec. 20, and Jan. 6). Tickets are on sale at tianyuculture.us/nyc.
