Planning your baby’s nursery is one of the most fun parts of preparing for your little one’s arrival. This serene space blends historic charm with modern touches, layering in soft hues and playful art to pull it together. We asked designer Alexa Harris-Ralff of AHR Designs in Maplewood to share her tips for picking a color scheme, décor and where to splurge vs. save.

New Jersey Family: Tell us about your vision for this nursery.

Alexa Harris-Ralff: This family waited a long time for their very special little girl and they were thrilled with our design. We kept the furniture modern and clean-lined to balance the charm this home has. We color-washed the room in a beautiful blue grey green (depending on the way the light hits it can be any of the three). Pops of floral on the windows, touches of pink in the art and crib, and thoughtful styling add the right dose of feminine charm. A funky light keeps things fresh in this historic Tudor and the mirror reflects the natural light the window provides.

NJF: How do you choose colors and décor that will grow with your baby?

AHR: The basics need to be good quality: a solid crib and a sturdy changing table that can convert to a dresser. Splurge on a great ceiling fixture. These typically don’t age and will elevate the room for years to come. Cut the clutter. Start now with bookshelves and matching bins for the small stuff.

NJF: What’s worth investing in vs. saving on?

AHR: Invest in sleep. Don’t skimp on quality blackout window treatments. These can last for decades. Paint is a low-cost item that can easily be changed every few years. Just go for it!

NJF: What’s an affordable way to make a nursery feel personal?

AHR: Art! Etsy prints, flea market finds, or posters of anything nostalgic from your own childhood can “spark joy” and create fun nursery walls. Hang them in matching frames for the fun stuff you gather.

NJF: Where do you like to shop for unique pieces?

AHR: Art walks or local art shows can be a wonderful source for reasonable art and décor. Buy what you love. Don’t overthink it. If you’re lucky enough to have blank walls to fill, then fill them.
