Camp is so much more than learning a new sport, swimming, or performing on stage. It’s a place where children grow, stretch, and gain life skills that help them thrive long after summer ends. Below are just a few of the life lessons children learn through camp.
INDEPENDENCE
Some skills can only be learned when parents aren’t around. At both day and overnight camps, children gain independence by making everyday decisions on their own—choosing what to eat from the salad bar, deciding what to wear in the morning, or selecting their elective activities. These small choices become important stepping stones, helping campers learn self reliance.
CONFIDENCE
Camp offers countless confidence-building opportunities each day. Whether it’s riding the bus to camp for the first time, conquering a fear of heights on the zip line, or standing up for the first time on a paddleboard, campers grow by trying new things in a safe, supportive environment. Each success, no matter how small, strengthens their belief in themselves and their abilities.
SOCIAL GROWTH
At camp, children get the chance to form friendships on their own, without parents guiding their social interactions. They meet kids from other towns and with different interests, learning how to connect, communicate, and choose their own friends. These experiences help campers build social confidence and start to make their own decisions on who they spend their time with.
PROBLEM-SOLVING
While counselors are there for support, campers quickly learn to figure some things out for themselves. From deciding what to do when they left their swimsuit in their bunk before swimming, to deciding whether to stay for another session, children develop problem-solving skills by navigating challenges independently.
UNPLUGGING FROM TECHNOLOGY
One of the greatest gifts of camp is the break from screens. Camps are phone- and tablet-free, giving campers the chance to spend time outdoors and engage with friends face to face. Although many children feel uneasy at first about leaving technology behind, most quickly appreciate the freedom from the pressures of social media and the constant need to stay connected with peers.
RESILIENCE
Resilience grows when children face challenges and learn to overcome them. While no parent likes to see their child struggle, those moments—like feeling homesick or disagreeing with a bunkmate—help campers develop emotional strength and coping skills. With guidance and support from staff, they discover that they can handle tough situations on their own.
TEAMWORK AND COMMUNITY
Camp is all about working together as part of a team and community. Whether through Color Wars, living in a bunk with others, or participating in camp-wide traditions, children learn what it means to collaborate, support others, and contribute to something bigger than themselves. These shared experiences foster belonging and help campers feel part of a warm and caring community. So, while your children will certainly learn a new sport, create ceramics in art, and play lots of gaga, the true magic of camp is in the life lessons your children will carry with them for a lifetime.
