At YMCA Camp Bernie, summer is more than fun—it’s a chance for children to grow in confidence, character and connection. Guided by the YMCA’s core values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility, Camp Bernie creates a welcoming environment where kids feel safe to explore, try new things and be themselves.
“Camp Bernie is a place where kids can unplug, explore and grow into their most confident selves,” says Cara Apsley, senior vice president of Childcare + Camps for Camp Bernie and the Ridgewood YMCA. “What truly sets us apart is our intentional focus on character development alongside fun, adventure and discovery.”
Campers enjoy classic camp experiences like swimming, hiking, biking, archery, arts and crafts, and campfires, along with outdoor education programs focused on forest, stream and habitat ecology. These hands-on experiences spark curiosity, encourage respect for nature, and help campers build meaningful friendships.
Adventure-based programming, including the ASE challenge courses, climbing and rappelling tower, zip line and giant swing, supports teamwork, communication and confidence. “Campers are encouraged to try new things and take healthy risks at their own comfort level while learning to support and encourage one another,” Apsley says.
At Camp Bernie, summer memories are just the beginning. Families consistently share how much growth they see in their children—from stronger social skills to greater independence. “I’m most proud of the sense of belonging campers gain here,” she says. “Through our Summer Camp for All scholarships, we ensure every child can experience the joy and community that define Camp Bernie.”
