What’s better than watching movies under the stars? Watching free movies under the stars. So save some money, spend a little time outdoors and take in a family-friendly flick. If the kids get restless, they can always take a break and look for lightning bugs. Have fun out there! (While most movies listed here are rated G or PG, some may be PG-13 or have heavier themes for kids, so remember to check before you go.)

Asbury Park
A 4,300-square-foot rooftop space on the 6th floor of the Asbury Hotel blanketed in artificial lawn, Baronet turns into an outdoor cinema, a modern “carless” drive-in, open to the public showing a variety of movies projected on the 20-foot movie wall.

Avalon
Enjoy a movie down the shore at Avalon Recreation Department’s Beach Movies on select Fridays from July 5 through August 23.

Belmar Movies on the Beach
Movies are screened on the 7th Avenue Beach at dusk on Wednesdays, July 10 to August 28.

Cape May Movies on the Beach
The featured movie will begin at dusk at 714 Beach Ave. on July 11, 18 and 25.

Fort Lee Summer Concert & Movie Series
Movies will be held at the Jack Alter Fort Lee Community Center every Thursday from July 11 to August 22, all starting at 8:30 pm.

Freehold Family Movie Night
Movies are shown on Wednesdays, June 26 to August 21, in front of the Hall of Records in Downtown Freehold. Movies begin at 8:30 p.m.

Gloucester County Movies in the Park
Movies are screened throughout the county on select Monday, Wednesday and Friday nights. All movies begin at dusk, around 8-8:30 pm. Check the schedule for movie titles and locations.

The Highland Park Outdoor Movie Theater
Vintage cartoons are shown at dusk, followed by the premiere movie at 9 pm. Dates are every other Saturday, from May 18 to September 28 at the municipal parking lot.

Hoboken Movies Under the Stars
From June 12 to August 21, you can catch various movies in different parts of the city. Check the schedule for dates, titles and locations.

Jersey City
From June 7 through August 23, various movies will be shown at various locations throughout the city. Check the schedule for details.

Lavallette
Movies are shown at sunset, around 8:30 pm, from the Lavallette Gazebo on Philadelphia Avenue and Bay Boulevard. Movie schedule is Tuesdays, from July 9 to August 20.

Long Branch
Pier Village presents Movie Night & BBQ, featuring “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” at the Broadway Band Shell, beginning at 6 pm.

Margate
Margate’s Thrilling Thursdays includes a variety of movies on Thursdays, from July 5 to Aug. 29. Beach activities start at 6:30 pm, followed by the movies on Huntington Beach at 7 pm.

Monclair Film
The 15th annual free Movie Night Under the Stars kicks off at Lackawanna Plaza (near Crane Park) on June 23 with “Barbie.” It continues on July 21 with the 20th anniversary screening of “Napoleon Dynamite” with early dance lessons by AC Dance at Essex County Anderson Park. August 24 shows “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” at Essex County Brookdale Park (Archery Field).

New Brunswick
The State Theatre New Jersey will show movies on Tuesdays from July 9 to August 6, but note that these will be held inside the theater, not outdoors. Movies are shown at both 10:30 am and 7 pm, and all will have Spanish subtitles.

New Brunswick
Sundays at The Yard include free movies along College Ave, on Sundays from June 2 to August 25.

Paramus
There will be free Movies After Dark in Van Saun County Park on select Wednesdays and Fridays, July 12 to August 23.

Point Pleasant
Jenkinson’s Movies on the Beach takes place on the beach across from the boardwalk each Tuesday throughout the summer, from June 25 to August 27. Movies begin at dusk.

Princeton Movie Nights on the Green
Movies are screened on Palmer Square at dusk. Come early for upscale shopping or al fresco dining. Bring your own chair or blanket. “Honey, I Shrunk the Kids” plays on July 12 followed by “Aladdin” on August 2.

Princeton University Art Museum
This year’s outdoor film series features musical films from across the decades. All screenings begin at sundown, approximately 8 pm, on campus at Alexander Beach, located behind Alexander Hall. Bring chairs or blankets. Popcorn will be provided. Dates are July 11 (Big Fish) and July 25 (Lady Bird). A special Picnic and Family Movie Night will be August 1, screening Disney’s “Encanto.”

Red Bank
Watch a movie under the stars at Riverside Gardens Park, on Tuesdays from July 9 to August 13.

Ridgefield Park
During Family Movie Night on July 13, watch Disney’s “Encanto.”

Ridgewood
The Ridgewood Guild’s Movies in the Park event takes place every other Wednesday, June 12 to August 14. Arrive about 30 minutes ahead of showtime to find a good spot for your chair or blanket.

Robbinsville
“Wheels & Reels” Outdoor Movie Night on July 19 includes the movie “Wonka,” plus a chocolate eating contest sponsored by David Bradley Chocolatier.

Sea Isle City
Free Family Movie Under the Stars takes place on Wednesdays, July 3 to August 28, at Excursion Park. 

Somerville’s Starlit Cinema
Watch a movie on a giant screen with a state-of-the-art sound system. All shows start around 7 pm on Division Street. Movies are “Wish” on July 11, “Grease on July 18” and “Barbie” on July 25.

South Brunswick
Family Movie Night in the Park on June 21 screens “Migration.” On July 19, listen to children’s musician mr. RAY play before a screening of “The Little Mermaid;” there will be food trucks and bounce houses. Another Family Movie Night on the Park on August 23 features “Kung Fu Panda 4,” along with food trucks on site.

South Orange
South Orange’s Summer Nights Moonlit Movies are screened on Wednesdays, August 14, 21 and 28, at 8 pm.

Titusville
The showing of Disney’s “Encanto” in Woolsey Park has been postponed again to July 31.

West Milford
Bring a blanket, some snacks and your family and enjoy a movie under the stars at the Bubbling Springs Rotary Gazebo. Dates are July 26, August 30 and September 27.

Westwood
Pascack County Brook Park will host movies on July 10, 17 and 24.

The Wildwoods
Free family movie nights take place every Tuesday at Byrne Plaza in Downtown Wildwood, from June 25 to August 20.

Woodland Park
September 1 at Garret Mountain
