New Jersey has some of the most charming small towns in the country, and three of them are finalists in the USA Today 10 Best Readers’ Choice 2024 poll for Best Small Towns in the Northeast.

Not only is Cape May’s beach consistently voted one of the best in the country, but the city is also dotted with quaint stores and restaurants and set in a neighborhood filled with colorful Victorian homes. We love exploring the lighthouse, visiting the zoo, eating at Beach Plum Farm and staying overnight at Congress Hall. It’s also a great place to walk, bike, swim or take a trolley tour.

Next up, Lambertville sits along the Delaware River and is short walk over a scenic bridge to New Hope, PA. Before you cross the NJ border, check out the restaurants, shops, boutiques and playground space on the Jersey side. Lambertville Station Restaurant & Inn has breathtaking views of the waterfront, whether you dine or stay for the weekend. The ice cream at Owowcow is worth the trip alone.

There is no shortage of natural or historical sites in Morristown. Known for its Revolutionary War-time roots, you can visit the Morris Museum, Historic Speedwell and Maccullouch Hall Historical Museum. Get outside at Frelinghuysen Arboretum or Morristown National Historic Park. The downtown area has plenty of stores and restaurants, too.
