New Jersey is filled with beautiful downtowns with small-town charm, quaint villages, bustling cities and pretty suburban neighborhoods, and a recent study is shouting them out.
Taking primary data from Realtor.com such as the demand score of a home in the town (aka the unique listing page viewers per property) and the median number of days spent on the market, the website BetOhio.com compiled a list of the most popular towns across the country. These two metrics were weighted with a score of 50, and the final score was given out of 100.
Cranford is the No. 1 town on the New Jersey list and No. 49 in the United States. Cranford is a charming and family-friendly town with the Rahway River flowing from north to south. Once nicknamed the “Venice of New Jersey,” families riding along the banks of the river in canoes and small boats are common in the summertime. The downtown is filled with restaurants, mom-and-pop shops and retail stores. The Cranford train station to New York City is in the center of town and the town has its share of parks and recreational facilities, too.
Montclair is No. 2 in NJ and came in at No. 54 on the overall list. Aside from having one of the state’s biggest destination downtowns, NJ’s citified suburb with vintage homes and cultural institutions is also home to Montclair State University, the Wellmont Theater, the Montclair Art Museum and both a film and library festival every year. It’s also home to the pretty Van Vleck Home & Gardens and the Presby Memorial Iris Gardens.
Marlton is No. 3 in NJ and No. 80 on the national list. A small town suburb of Philadelphia, Marlton offers shopping, great restaurants and beautiful greenery. The town’s residents love its Fourth of July and Christmas parades, too.
Parsippany is No. 4 in NJ, and No. 113 in the country. Also referred to as Parsippany-Troy Hills Township, there is an urban and suburban feel, with lots of restaurants, coffee shops and parks.
Cherry Hill is No. 5 on the Garden State list, and No. 137 in the nation. Just outside of Philadelphia, there’s plenty to do on this side of the river, from huge shopping areas to Historic Croft Farm to great restaurants. It’s also home to the first indoor shopping mall in the U.S.
Riverton is No. 6 on the list, also ranking No. 148, attracting everyone from young families to retirees because it’s also close to Philly but has a much more relaxed feel. The area is steeped in history, as it dates back to the Quakers.
Sewell is No. 7 in NJ and No. 157 in the country. It’s a typically wealthy community with a low crime rate, located within Mantua Twp. and Washington Twp.
Englishtown is No. 8 in NJ and No. 167 on the main list. Considered a sister city to Manalapan Twp., it’s more quaint and historic, with a walkable area that includes a saddle shop, yoga studio, old-time bar and famous ice cream shop.
Ridgewood is No. 9 and places at 235 in the country. The village is filled with historic homes on both sides of the train station and its downtown is filled with shopping and restaurants on East Ridgewood Avenue. Close to major shopping malls and NYC, it has a small-town community feel.
Swedesboro is No. 10 in NJ and No. 241 on the overall list. There are lots of things to do with the kids, from Dalton Farms to Bridgeport Speedway to Schorn Log Cabin, and it was named a Tree City USA by the National Arbor Day Foundation.
