
Make a Vintage Christmas Tree Cake
For cake:
Baking spray with flour
½ cup all-purpose flour
2 tsp baking powder
½ tsp kosher salt
½ cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, at room temp
1 cup granulated sugar
2 large eggs, at room temp
1 tsp pure vanilla extract
1 cup milk, at room temp
1 14- by 10-in. Christmas tree-shaped cake pan (like Wilton Christmas Tree Pan, Amazon)
For frosting:
2 cups confectioners’ sugar, sifted
½ cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, at room temp
½ tsp kosher salt
2 tbsp milk
1 tsp pure vanilla extract
Orange, red, green, blue and yellow fondant
Tree light–shaped silicone food mold
Active 40 min. Total 2 hr. 30 min.
Serves 10 to 12
Make cake:
- Heat oven to 325°F. Coat Christmas tree–shaped cake pan with baking spray. In bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder and salt.
- Using electric mixer on medium speed, beat butter and sugar until light and fluffy, 2 to 4 min. Add eggs, 1 at a time, beating until incorporated after each addition. Beat in vanilla. Reduce speed to low and add flour mixture and milk, beginning and ending with flour mixture, just until incorporated.
- Spread batter into prepared pan and bake until wooden pick inserted in center comes out clean, 25 to 30 min. Let cool in pan on wire rack 10 min., then invert onto rack to cool completely.
- Make frosting and decorate: Using electric mixer on medium speed, beat sugar, butter and salt until fluffy, 2 to 3 min. Beat in milk until fluffy, 2 to 3 min. Beat in vanilla. Frost top and sides of cake.
- Shape fondant into Christmas lights using silicone mold. Arrange on cake.
