Now that nearly 100 people have tested positive for coronavirus in NJ and there have been two deaths, Governor Murphy has just called on all NJ schools—both public and private—to close on Wednesday, March 18. The statewide move to digital learning will affect 1.4 million public school students as well as all private school students in New Jersey.
Over the past couple of weeks, the state has asked schools and colleges to outline plans for how they should operate if they need to close due to a viral outbreak. As a result, a number of NJ schools have closed their doors to create long-term plans in case of a COVID-19 outbreak.
Here is a list of schools that had taken action before the statewide shutdown.
Bayonne
Schools will be closed and activities and sports will be canceled through Friday, March 27. There will be no virtual learning on Friday, March 13.
Bergen County
In order to limit the spread of COVID-19, all 75 Bergen County school districts will shut down as of March 13 at 3 pm. Teachers will have the weekend to prepare for the transition to remote online classes. The situation will be reassessed in two weeks.
Bergenfield
All schools will have early dismissal on Friday, March 13.
Berkeley Heights
The school district will have a half-day on Friday, March 13 and be closed on Monday, March 16 and remote learning will begin Tuesday, March 17.
Berkeley Township
Schools here are closed until March 27.
Bernards Twp.
Schools will dismiss early on Friday, March 13. A distance learning plan will go in effect Monday, March 16 through Sunday, March 29, with hope to reopen on Monday, March 30.
Bogota
The district will hold a single session day on Thursday, March 12 for COVID-19 prep.
Bordentown
Monday-Tuesday, March 16-17 will be half days.
Bound Brook
Schools will close on Monday, March 16 and online learning will begin Wednesday, March 18.
Brick
On Monday, March 16, schools will have a half-ay professional development day to prepare for e-learning possibilities.
Bridgewater-Raritan
Schools are closed Friday, March 13 and a distance learning plan will become effective on Monday, March 16 through Friday, March 27 after a 23-year-old man tested positive for coronavirus.
Brielle
The district will close at 12:50 pm on Monday, March 16 to plan for remote learning. Class trips have been postponed.
Butler
Schools will be closed Friday, March 13 through Friday, March 27. Distance learning will begin Monday, March 16.
Cedar Grove
The school district will have an early dismissal on Thursday, March 12.
Chatham
There will be an early dismissal on Friday, March 13. Beginning Monday, March 16, schools will be closed for at least two weeks. After two weeks, a decision will be made regarding school closures.
Clifton
School will be closed on Monday, March 16 while instructional staff collaborates on plans for possible school closures in the future.
Collingswood
Early dismissal for all schools from Thursday-Friday, March 12-13.
Cranford
All schools in the district will be closed on Friday, March 13 (they originally planned to close Monday, March 16) so staff can develop plans in case of long-term school closures. The school will also work to clean and disinfect its buildings. The district will change its March 30 single-session day to a full day to account for the loss of class time.
Delran
Schools will have a delayed opening on Monday-Tuesday, March 16-17 while planning for a long-term coronavirus-related shutdown. There will be a 12:30 pm dismissal on Thursday, March 12.
Dumont
On Friday, March 13 the district will have a half-day for professional development.
East Brunswick
After a confirmed positive case of COVID-19 in the town, the school system and all activities will be closed through Sunday, March 15.
East Hanover
On Friday, March 13 school will be closed (a snow day will be used) and schools will transition to a distance learning model beginning Monday, March 16 through Friday, March 27 while the district reevaluates further closures.
Edison Twp.
Schools will be closed Monday, March 16 (using a snow day) and remote learning will begin Tuesday, March 17 until further notice.
Elizabeth
Schools will close on Monday, March 16 at 12:15 pm so staff can meet to make COVID-19 plans.
Ewing
Schools will be closed Friday, March 13.
Fairfield
On Thursday, March 12 schools will conduct a single session day and school will be dismissed at 12:55 pm. Lunch will not be served.
Fair Lawn
Schools will be closed Friday, March 13 to prepare (a snow day will be used).
Felician University
Beginning Monday, March 16 through Saturday, March 28, classes will be held remotely.
Flemington
There will be an early dismissal on Friday, March 13 and beginning Monday, March 16 students should prepare for virtual school.
Florham Park
Schools will be closed Friday, March 13 for sanitization (a snow day will be used). Beginning Monday, March 16 through Friday, March 27 distance learning will be implemented.
Franklin
From Monday-Wednesday, March 16-18, school will be closed and beginning on Thursday, March 19 the school will begin remote learning days, which are anticipated to run through at least March 20.
Garfield
Early dismissals on Thursday-Friday, March 12-13.
Glen Rock
Schools will be closed Monday, March 16 for staff development.
Gloucester Twp.
There will be a one session half-day on Friday, March 13.
Green Brook
There will be a two hour delayed opening on Friday, March 13. Beginning Monday, March 16 through spring break (reopening April 13), the school will be closed and students will learn remotely.
Hamilton
Schools will be closed from Monday, March 16 through March 27 and classes will be conducted remotely.
Henry Hudson Tri-District
All Henry Hudson Regional, Atlantic Highlands and Highlands schools will have an early dismissal day on Friday, March 13.
Highland Park
Schools are closed on Friday, March 13 after a student was indirectly exposed to COVID-19.
Hillsborough
Beginning Monday, March 16, schools will be closed for at least two weeks and follow a flexible learning schedule.
Hillside
All schools will be closed on Friday, March 13 for deep cleaning. Before and aftercare services will also be canceled.
Hoboken
Schools (public school district and charter schools) will be closed from Monday, March 16 through Friday, March 27.
Howell Twp.
Students will have an early dismissal on Monday, March 16 and Wednesday, March 18.
Jackson
On Friday, March 13, the school will have a two hour delayed opening while staff prepares for further COVID-19 closures.
Jersey City Public Schools
All schools will be closed the week of March 16.
Keyport Public Schools
Schools will dismiss early on Thursday-Friday, March 12-13.
Kinnelon
Public schools will be closed Monday, March 16 through the end of spring break, April 10. Schools intend to reopen Monday, April 13.
Lakehurst Elementary School
Wednesday-Friday, March 11-13 will be abbreviated days with no aftercare while schools prepare for COVID-19.
Little Ferry
Schools will close early on Thursday, March 19.
Little Silver
After-school activities in all town public schools are canceled through March 13 for cleaning after a local man tested positive.
Livingston
Schools will have an early dismissal on Friday, March 13. Remote learning will begin Monday, March 16 through Friday, March 27 while the school reassesses.
Lyndhurst
On Thursday, March 12, Lyndhurst Public Schools will have a single session. The aftercare program is still available for those already registered.
Madison
Madison will be canceling its non-essential activities beginning Friday, March 13. On Tuesday, March 17, the school will communicate a plan for remote instruction to parents.
Mahwah
Schools will be closed Friday, March 13. Kindergarten registration for 2021 will go on as planned.
Master Dei Prep
School will be closed on Friday, March 13 and Monday, March 16 for professional development regarding COVID-19.
Metuchen
Schools will be closed Friday, March 13 and will conduct remote learning from March 16-20.
Middlesex
Schools will be closed on Friday, March 13 so teachers can prep for long-term coronavirus closings. There will be no before or aftercare services.
Millburn
Schools will be closed on Thursday, March 12 for COVID-19 prep and have an early dismissal on Friday, March 13. Beginning Monday, March 16, the school will be closed for two weeks.
Monmouth County Vocational School District
On Friday, March 13, schools will close at noon to allow staff to prepare for remote learning.
Monmouth University
All classes have been canceled for the remainder of this week. Spring break is scheduled for Saturday, March 14.
Montclair
Schools will be closed on Friday, March 13 for professional development on virtual learning.
Montgomery
School will be closed Friday, March 13. Students will begin distance learning on Monday, March 16 through Friday, March 27.
Mount Ephraim
Schools are closed on Friday, March 13.
Mt. Olive
All schools in the district will be closed Monday, March 9. The district website doesn’t cite a reason, but weekend activities at the school were also canceled.
Neptune
The school district will be closed from Friday, March 13 through Monday, March 16.
New Providence
There will be an early dismissal for all schools on Friday, March 13. Starting on Monday, March 16 all schools will be closed for students until further notice.
Newark
People’s Prep will be closed until Monday, March 16 while the school is disinfected after a staff member spent time with people in a location where someone who has a confirmed case of COVID-19 had been at some point earlier this week. North Star Academy is also closed until April 13.
NJIT
This week, classes and exams will continue but after spring break, beginning March 23, classes will continue virtually.
North Arlington
School will close early on Thursday and Friday to plan for a potential school closure.
North Brunswick
After a confirmed case of COVID-19 in East Brunswick, schools will be closed on Friday, March 13 through Monday, March 16.
Oaklyn
Early dismissals on Thursday-Friday, March 12-13.
Oceanport
Schools will be closed Thursday-Friday, March 12-13 for cleaning.
Old Bridge
After a presumptive positive case of COVID-19 of a parent in the district, schools will be closed on Friday, March 13 and Monday, March 16 (using snow days).
Paramus
Schools in Paramus will be closed on Wednesday, March 11. The Frisch School will continue to be closed until Wednesday, March 18 after a number of students were exposed to an individual in Westchester with a confirmed case of COVID-19.
Parsippany-Troy Hills
The school is prepping for remote instruction, which will happen on Monday, March 16’s half day.
Plainfield
Schools will be closed on Friday, March 13 while staff prepares.
Princeton
The district will have early dismissals from Thursday-Friday, March 12-13.
Princeton University
Students are being asked to stay home after spring break and can meet academic requirements remotely. In addition, Princeton will also limit the number and size of campus gatherings and meetings through at least April 5.
Red Bank Regional High School
School will be closed through Wednesday after news of a Little Silver man being a presumptive positive. His sibling attends the high school. Starting on Thursday, March 12, the high school will hold classes remotely until further notice.
Ridgefield Park
School will be closed on Wednesday, March 11.
Robbinsville
Large school-related events have been canceled through March 21.
Roselle
Schools will be closed Tuesday-Wednesday, March 10-11 while the school is being sanitized. There will be a half day on Friday, March 13. A staff member was in contact with someone who recently tested positive for coronavirus.
Rowan University
The University has extended its spring break for an extra week so teachers can begin prepping to teach courses online, if needed. Students will return to class Monday, March 30.
Rutgers University
Classes will be canceled Thursday, March 12 through the end of spring break Sunday, March 22. Beginning on Monday, March 23, classes will continue remotely.
Sayreville
Schools will be closed Friday, March 13 through Monday, March 16. All activities are canceled.
Scotch Plains-Fanwood
Schools will be closed beginning Monday, March 16 until further notice.
Sea Girt Elementary School
SGES will have an early dismissal on Monday, March 16 so teachers and staff can prep.
Seton Hall University
All in-person classes will be suspended beginning Wednesday, March 11 through Friday, March 13. Classes will resume remotely on Monday, March 16 through at least Sunday, March 22. An update will be sent on March 19 with additional information.
South Brunswick
Students will be released early on Monday, March 9 and closed on Wednesday, March 11 so staff can work to develop response plans and disinfect buildings. Students will use remote learning from Thursday-Friday, March 12-13.
South Orange-Maplewood
Early dismissal on Friday, March 13 for the entire district. School will be closed March 16-17 and all extracurriculars are canceled.
South River
All public schools will be closed on Thursday, March 12 due to a coronavirus case in a neighboring town. The district will use one of its snow days.
Stevens Institute of Technology
Stevens is working to move all classes online and are encouraging students to stay at home and attend classes online, if possible (dorms are still open).
Summit
The district will be closed starting on Friday, March 13 through spring break, April 10.
The College of New Jersey
TCNJ classes will convene online for two weeks following spring break (beginning March 23).
Tinton Falls School District
The district will operate on a single-session schedule on Thursday, March 12.
Toms River
There will be an early dismissal on Friday, March 13 to sanitize and prep.
Trenton
From Thursday-Friday, March 12-13 schools will be closed. On Friday, the school will be closed for sanitization.
Union Twp.
Students will have a half-day schedule on Friday, March 13. All afterschool and weekend activities are canceled.
Voorhees
From Thursday-Friday, March 12-13, Eastern Camden County Regional School District will dismiss students at 12:05 pm to allow staff to plan for remote school days. Sports and activities will occur at normal times in the afternoon.
Warren
The Warren Hills High and Middle Schools will close on Wednesday, March 11 to develop COVID-19 to plan for a “worse case scenario.”
Washington Twp.
Schools will be closed Friday, March 13 and Monday, March 16. At home learning will begin Tuesday, March 17. Schools will be closed through spring break and the district will reassess whether or not to reopen on Monday, April 6.
Wayne
On Friday, March 13, public schools will be closed while staff plans for the possibility of long-term school closures.
Westampton
Thursday, March 12 will have an early dismissal so teachers can meet to plan.
Westfield
Schools will close Monday, March 16 until further notice.
West Long Branch School District
On Wednesday and Thursday, March 11-12, students will half days so custodial staff can work to disinfect.
West Milford
There will be a half-day on Friday, March 13. On Monday, March 16 schools will begin remote learning.
