We’ve been fans of Stumpy’s Hatchet House for a few years now (we even slung some axes ourselves!). Hatchet throwing has become more and more popular around NJ since. Now, Stumpy’s has opened its biggest location yet in Upper Saddle River—and it’s the biggest in the country, too.
Stumpy’s Hatchet House in Bergen County is a 14,000-square-foot space with 16 throwing pits, a VIP private pit and and event space. It also boasts WiFi, televisions and giant games like Jenga.
“We’re excited to bring our brand of axe throwing to the Bergen County area,” says owner Armando DiRienzo. “With school getting back in session, we’re happy to be opening this time of year. We know how hectic it is for parents getting the kiddos back on schedule, and we’re a great place for a parents night out. We’re a great place to hang out with friends, family or even [for] a date night.”
Stumpy’s Hatchet House has other locations in NJ in Eatontown (its first location ever), Delran, Fairfield and Green Brook. It all started in 2015 with two couples barbecuing in Barnegat Bay. Chopping fire wood turned into an impromptu axe throwing game and the rest was history. Owners Mark and Trish Oliphant and Stuart and Kelly Josberger turned their idea into a safe, controlled throwing pit where throwers can practice their technique. The rustic space also includes cozy couches and common areas to hang with friends.
Pricing is $25/1 hour for 1-4 people, $40/2 hours for 5+ people and $15/non-throwers. The Bergen location is located at 107 Pleasant Ave. in Upper Saddle River. Call 201-962-7363 or visit stumpyshh.com/bergencountynj/ for more information.
