While working as the assistant coach of the local middle school girls’ volleyball team, Katherine Mi was encouraged by the growing popularity of volleyball in the Somerset County area.
There were 40 girls at tryouts, with even more on the tryout waiting list. So, she decided to put the ball in her court – literally – and promote youth volleyball in the community.
As a junior at Ridge High School in Basking Ridge she decided to collaborate with the Somerset Hills YMCA to add the first Adaptive Youth and Youth Volleyball classes to their program of offerings so that players wouldn’t have to worry about being cut.
“These classes are designed to help players of all skill levels strengthen their fundamentals through gameplay while encouraging sportsmanship and teamwork,” Katherine told New Jersey Family. “It has been a true privilege to coach these classes alongside other high school players and instill healthy lifestyle habits to future leaders.”
Aside from giving everyone a chance to play, she also hopes youth players learn valuable life lessons and gain confidence, on or off the court.
