Six Flags Great Adventure Has the Best Roller Coaster in the Country, According to Newsweek

This fan fave makes you feel like you're on a broncing bull

We already know Six Flags Great Adventure is the best when it comes to roller coasters, but now it’s been named home to the best roller coaster in the country by Newsweek!

Roller coaster fans were disappointed earlier this year when Kingda Ka was demolished – but then were excited about the opening of the new THE FLASH: Vertical Velocity coaster. Now another fan fave is being celebrated: the ride pros at Newsweek named El Toro the No. 1 coaster in the U.S.!

El Toro looks like a traditional wooden coaster, but it uses modern technology to speed the trains along the tracks. The first drop is 176 feet at an angle of 76 degrees – and for the next 2+ minutes you’ll feel like you’re on a bucking bronco, with the bull trying to shake you out of your train (not to worry: you’re safe when strapped in). It’s one of the fastest and tallest wooden coasters in the world, with 19 stories of steep drops, speeds up to 70 miles per hour, and nine anti-gravity hangs.

Panelists and contributors at Newsweek picked the fastest, highest and most nostalgic thrill rides in the U.S., and then had their readers vote.

The Top 10 roller coasters in the country, according to Newsweek, are:

  1. El Toro, Six Flags Great Adventure, Jackson, NJ
  2. Iron Gwazi, Busch Gardens Tampa Bay, Tampa Bay, FL
  3. Jurassic World VelociCoaster, Universal Islands of Adventure, Orlando, FL
  4. Millennium Force, Cedar Point, Sandusky, OH
  5. The Beast, Kings Island, Mason, OH
  6. Fury 325, Carowinds, Charlotte, NC
  7. Tron Lightcycle/Run, Disney World’s Magic Kingdom, Orlando, FL
  8. X2, Six Flags Magic Mountain, Valencia, CA
  9. Outlaw Run, Silver Dollar City, Branson, MO
  10. Pantherian, Kings Dominion, Doswell, VA

El Toro was also named the No. 1 coaster by readers of USA Today in 2022; the No. 1 Wooden Coaster in the World by the 2011 Internet Coaster Poll, and again in 2017 by Amusement Today’s Golden Ticket Awards. Would you ride it?!
