New Jersey summers are synonymous with the Shore, but the Garden State is also home to beautiful lakes. Aside from fewer crowds, a day on the lake offers watersports on calmer water, gorgeous views, and a peaceful escape close to home.
Calgary Homes surveyed 3,007 Americans and Canadians to identify the most sought-after lakefront real estate in North America, and three New Jersey spots made the list.
The first NJ spot on the list, Greenwood Lake, placed 50th in the overall ranking. Located on the border of West Milford in Passaic County, and Warwick, NY, the Jersey side is more residential, with homes that have private docks. It’s an exclusive area for people who live there, but through The Greenwood Lake Experience, anyone can go boating, water skiing, paddleboarding or play on the inflatable obstacle courses. The lake itself is about 7 miles long and covers 1,920 acres, and is composed of Fox, Chapel and Storms islands.
Lake Hopatcong is New Jersey’s largest freshwater lake (4 square miles and 50 miles of lakefront), offering swimming, kayaking, boating and canoeing up in Sussex County. At No. 106 on the list, homes in the area tend to be bungalows and renovated estates, many of which have their own boat slips and pretty lake views. The area has lots of restaurants that overlook the water, along with shopping, two playgrounds, a mini golf course, an arcade, and watersports. For a day in nature, take the James Leach Boardwalk Trail in Prospect Point Park to Liffy Island. The historic area was discovered by the Lenape tribe more than 12,000 years ago.
No. 110, Cranberry Lake, gives homeowners lake rights, docks and community beach access in Byram Twp. This Sussex County gem has New England vibes, with its clear water, rolling hills and summer cabins. It was originally formed in 1830 to serve as a reservoir for the Morris Canal, but in the 1920s, the Cranberry Lake Development Company built vacation homes in addition to year-round homes.
