Excitement was brewing earlier this year when news broke that the Philadelphia Soul would call NJ its season home. The team was scheduled to play its Arena Football League (AFL) 2024 season at the CURE Insurance Arena in Trenton.
However, a representative from CURE Insurance Arena confirmed this week that the games on May 26, June 23 and June 30 have been canceled. She said ticketholders will automatically receive a refund from their point of purchase.
An official statement from the AFL has not been released, though reports say the entire season has been chaotic. It seems the coach stepped down and players were released, leaving the team to scramble for the beginning of the season.
The AFL announced last week that Jeff Fisher would take over as commissioner, and in his introductory statement, it says the 10-team league will not include the Soul anymore, but that league leadership will discuss including the team in future games or seasons.
The AFL announced the return of the Soul in November. The team hired Kelly Logan as general manager and Patrick Pimmel as head coach to help bring another championship on board; they previously won the leagues in 2008, 2016 and 2017. The Soul also unveiled new uniforms and signed top players, including 2019 AFL Rookie of the Year Antwane Grant.
