Upper Township

New Jersey's Best Towns For Families 2017 Cape May County

Population: 12,283
Average Home Price: $367,041

First settled by whalers, fishermen and sailors in 1960, Upper Township’s rural beauty is a draw for outdoor enthusiasts across the state.

At 68.687 square miles Upper Township has a lot more going for it other than its size. This beach town butts right up against the busy boardwalk of Ocean City, but also has tons of character in its own right.

For starters, the Tuckahoe-Corbin City Fish and Wildlife Management Area is a great place to bird watch, hike and unwind right on the NJ coastline. And if you’d actually like to take a dip in the ocean waters, head to one of the many free beaches in town for a swim under a lifeguard’s watchful eye.

Have a crew full of history buffs? Swing by the Marshallville Historic District, the site of an old glass-making village that’s still standing—shipyard, tavern and all. There are also tons of camping spots and beautiful inlets perfect for an afternoon kayak.
