
With Mother’s Day around the corner, personal finance website WalletHub recently released its report of 2024’s Best & Worst States for Working Moms, and NJ was ranked the sixth best state to be a working mom.
How did WalletHub determine whether a state is better for women juggling parenting and working? The site examined 17 key metrics, including median salary for women, female unemployment rate and daycare quality.
Analyzing life as a working mom, NJÂ ranked (with No. 1 being the best and No. 25 being average):
–6th overall
–5th for parental leave policy score
–8th for work-life balance
–10th for pediatricians per capita
–12th for professional opportunities
–15th for the average length of a woman’s work week, in hours
–15th for childcare availability
–16th for daycare quality
–18th for the percentage of single-mom families that are in poverty
–21st for gender pay gap – women’s earnings as a percentage of men’s earnings
–26th for childcare costs (we know this is a big one!) – adjusted for median women’s salary
–26th for the ratio of female executives to male executives
The 10 Best States for Working Moms in the U.S., according to the survey, are:
- Massachusetts
- Rhode Island
- District of Columbia
- Connecticut
- Minnesota
- New Jersey
- Washington
- Vermont
- Wisconsin
- Maine
