If one mom gets her way, piercing babies’ and toddlers’ ears might soon be against the law.
Susan Ingram, a mother in the U.K., wants to ban the practice and has launched a petition to make it illegal. She calls it a form of child cruelty and so far she has gotten 41,106 signatures.
Ingram addressed the petition to the U.K.’s Minister for Children, Edward Timpson, saying, “Severe pain and fear is inflicted upon infants unnecessarily. It serves no purpose other than to satisfy the parent’s vanity. Other forms of physically harming children are illegal—this should be no different.”
Ingram wants to impose a minimum age requirement for the practice. She doesn’t address the fact that piercing babies’ ears is a tradition certain cultures consider a rite of passage. But obviously tens of thousands of others agree with her that it’s a form of physical harm inflicted on innocent young children that needs to stop.
