Just 20 minutes outside in a natural landscape reduces stress!

There’s a reason why fresh air and sunshine have been long-standing recommendations to improve the well-being of people and all living things, and these days we have the science to explain it. Studies show that spending time in nature—or “Vitamin N” —is linked to improvements in cognitive ability, mood and mental health. It’s also a stress reducer, lowering levels of cortisol (the primary stress hormone) and allowing people to slow down, relax and disconnect from modern life’s barrage of stimuli. Just 20 minutes outside in a natural landscape reduces stress, and even listening to outdoor bird sounds from an open window can foster happier and more contented feelings!

Spending time in any kind of green space also has physical health benefits like reducing blood pressure and promoting positive health behaviors, like regular walking or exercise. Just 15 to 20 minutes of sun exposure helps your body create vitamin D which is critical for absorbing nutrients and strengthening bones. And, looking at the surrounding landscape gives your eyes a much-needed break from digital screens and other close focal points.

Nature enhances cognitive function, especially for children. Because nature is unpredictable and ever-changing, it requires kids to adapt and think, boosting creativity and problem-solving skills that can improve academic performance. Research also suggests that kids who play outside are happier and less anxious than kids who don’t.

Despite the many proven benefits of spending time in nature, children are spending less time than ever outside. In fact, children today spend less time outdoors than any other generation! The good news is that it’s never too late to introduce your youngsters (or aging parents!) to the adventure, fun and healing qualities of nature, and, with more than one million preserved acres in New Jersey, you don’t have to go far to access it.

“Vitamin N” doesn’t require a strenuous trip into the wilderness. Open a window. If you have a yard, spend time out in the grass and trees. Visit a local park. Get sandy and salty at the beach, or take a walk at a nature preserve near you. Engage kids with a nature-based scavenger hunt on your block. Whatever the scope of your nature outings, your whole family will reap the benefits.
