Girl Scouts Heart of New Jersey: Where Girl Scouts Discover & Build Lifelong Friendships

Meet the Camp

Girl Scouts Heart of New Jersey’s (GSHNJ) summer camp program inspires leadership, confidence, independence and a sense of community. Whether it’s a traditional day camp experience at The OVAL at South Mountain Reservation in Maplewood or sleepaway camp at the picturesque 300-acre Camp Hoover in Middleville, campers discover their potential, develop life skills and create lifelong friendships within a welcoming and diverse community.

ROOTED IN TRADITION

“Girl Scouts Heart of New Jersey is deeply rooted in tradition—from friendship circles and sing-alongs to cookouts and badgework,” says Camp Director Deborah Hooker. “A summer experience with us reflects the moments that have long defined Girl Scout camp. These traditions connect us to our shared history while also giving us the space to evolve and grow each year, allowing each camper and staff member to decide how they want to participate in and embrace the Girl Scout movement.”

Both general and specialty programs are offered, with activities ranging from outdoor skills, archery and challenge courses to swimming, boating and hiking. General programs provide a little bit of everything, while specialty programs delve into areas like creative arts, adventure, and horseback riding. New programming this summer includes Camp Fix It, where campers will have an opportunity to learn how to use hand tools for woodworking and complete a service project that uses their new skills. Other exciting options include sewing and engineering for youth in grades 4-6. Campers also have the chance to earn badges, and the camp’s progressive programming ensures that each camper learns at their own pace and skill level.

DEVELOPING LEADERSHIP SKILLS

“Many of our camp’s staff members grew up within the Girl Scout movement, so they’re passionate about recreating their experiences and embody a deep connection to the organization’s values,” Hooker says. Counselors also hail from overseas, exposing the campers to traditions and cultures from all over the world.

A program for older campers allows them to step into more active roles and gain hands-on experience supporting younger campers. “They learn how to communicate clearly, support activities and contribute to positive camp experiences—and all while gaining a deeper understanding of teamwork and collaboration,” she says.
