Intense storms slammed New Jersey on Monday, and two women died when their car was swept away by floodwaters in Plainfield. The storms caused roads to flood, cut power to thousands, and caused a house to explode in North Plainfield, leading Gov. Phil Murphy to declare a state of emergency.

Somerset County was hit particularly hard, with countless homes destroyed, necessary water rescues and dozens of closed roads. Hoboken, especially on the Jersey City border, had several roads closed. Belleville had rising flood waters and flash flood warnings.

Route 28 in Middlesex, Route 287 in Piscataway, Route 9 in Sayreville, Routes 1 and 9 in Kearny, Route 22 in Scotch Plains/Watchung/Bridgewater/Green Brook were all closed due to heavy flooding. Check 511nj.org for updated road closures and reopenings.

With more rain on the way, seven counties have been put under flood watch until Wednesday night: Sussex, Warren, Morris, Hunterdon, Somerset, Middlesex and Mercer. The towns that could be most impacted are New Brunswick, Washington, Somerville, Newton, Flemington, Trenton and Morristown.

Be aware of flash floods as you are traveling throughout the day tomorrow. The forecast shows 1 to 2 inches of rain over a 1 to 3 hour period, which can overflow bodies of water. This can happen near rivers, but also at creeks, streams and other seemingly low-level water areas.

For continuing updates, Northern New Jersey residents should visit the website for the U.S. National Weather Service New York. For those living in Central and Southern New Jersey, the U.S. National Weather Service Philadelphia/Mount Holly division will provide the latest info. The rain may continue on and off through Friday.
