A new skatepark in Montclair has some big names attached to it, like Tony Hawk and Alexis Sablone. This weekend, you’ll get to meet Alexis if you attend the official grand opening ceremony.
Candy Courts opened at Rand Park in Montclair earlier this year, but starting at 10 am Sunday you can see the seven unique, skateable structures in person (please note: the original date was Saturday). You can take a free skate lesson, enter a contest, receive a giveaway and listen to live music. At 1 pm, stay for a skate demo and product toss.
At noon, Sablone will help cut the ribbon for the park. She is a 2021 USA Olympic skateboarder, seven-time X Games Medalist, MIT and Barnard graduate, and the designer of the sculptures that are functional pieces of art for skaters of various abilities.
Tony Hawk’s foundation, The Skatepark Project, partnered with community grassroots organizations and Sablone to make the park not only a public work of art but also an area for youth community building and outdoor recreation.
Candy Courts skatepark, which took over the tennis courts, is located at Rand Park, 155 N. Fullerton Ave., Montclair. The ribbon cutting is hosted by Skate Essex Inc., a non-profit that promotes skateboarding in Northern New Jersey.
