Brunch for Dinner? Over Easy Kitchen Is Making It a Thing

Order lemon ricotta pancakes or steak frites for dinner

COURTESY OF OVER EASY KITCHEN

Sometimes you just want pancakes, waffles or a BEC for dinner instead of brunch. That’s exactly the idea behind Over Easy Kitchen’s new brunch for dinner menu. The restaurant is redefining the brunch experience with its OEK After Dark dinner service, served at its Holmdel location on Friday and Saturday nights.

The space feels warm and cozy, great for a night out with or without the kids, thanks to crowd pleasers like lemon ricotta pancakes and chicken and waffles.

SMART MARKETING / Sausage arancini

The dinner menu includes a variety of elevated apps, like Maduro steak bites (roasted sweet plantains with sauteed peppers, onions, mushrooms, steak bites and avocado, served with chimichurri and horseradish), birria tostada (fried corn tortillas layered with refried beans, guac, chopped romaine, mozzarella, tomato, Oaxaca, cilantro and salsa verde) and our favorite because it was spicy and crispy: sausage arancini (Sicilian rice balls in a peperonata sauce, stuffed with fresh mozzarella, Italian hot sausage and pecorino romano cheese).

There are a handful of salads offered at night, like the West Coast Greek, topped with  sliced avocado over romaine, grilled chicken, grape tomatoes, feta, red onions and kalamata olives, served with a bright housemade lemon vinaigrette. It’s comes with warm naan that’s on par with what you’d find at a local Indian restaurant.

Big Plates include the popular hot parm (fried breaded chicken cutlet with housemade vodka sauce and melted mozzarella, with a side salad and cheesy semolina garlic bread), steak frites covered in chimichurri butter, spicy rigatoni with pulled short rib, garlic shrimp scampi, and pan-seared salmon.

SMART MARKETING / Birria Tostada

Some of the dinnertime specials are included on the daytime menu, like the very popular Da Meech (fried breaded chicken cutlet topped with shaved grana Padano, arugula, pesto mayo and OEK’s balsamic dressing, with seeded semolina and arcadian salad on the side).

But don’t forget about the breakfast part of brunch: The Boardian BEC packs a punch, with its spicy tomato jam, house bacon slab, white cheddar, and scrambled egg on a seeded brioche bun.

Over Easy Kitchen uses high-quality, big-name ingredients, including Neuske’s bacon, Bell & Evans chicken, Pat LaFrieda beef and baked goods from Balthazar Bakery.

Though the coffee menu changes seasonally, we tried and loved the Maple Sea Salt Matcha, which was the perfect blend of matcha, maple syrup, vanilla and milk, topped with sea salt; and the peppermint hot chocolate.

There are lots of dessert options, too, whether you’d like a pastry at the table with espresso, cappuccino or hazelnut oat mocha (OEK serves non-coffee drinks, juice and teas, too), or for breakfast the next morning at home. Choose from crumb cake, brown butter chocolate chip cookies, muffins, and a Dubai brownie.

Over Easy Kitchen is owned by Demetri Rexinis, Kosta Rexinis and Holmdel native Frank Brusco. The trio is also behind Madison Modern Social in Old Bridge. Brusco also owns Gabriella’s Italian Steakhouse in Red Bank, Patricia’s of Holmdel, and Jackson Square Pizzeria in Jersey City, while Demetri and Kosta Rexinis also own The Gramercy at Lakeside Manor in Hazlet.

Over Easy Kitchen serves dinner every Friday and Saturday from 5 to 9 pm at its Holmdel location only, 2111 Highway 35. Breakfast and lunch are served from 8 am to 3 pm every day in Holmdel, and also at its Marlboro location, 460 County Rd. 520, and Fair Haven location, 588 River Rd.
