What better way can you think of to welcome spring then with a gorgeous farm-to-table dinner hosted on a 62-acre working farm in West Cape May? We got a chance to experience the Farm-to-Table Dinner Series at Beach Plum Farm just before the spring equinox, and the food and atmosphere made this an unforgettable evening.
Beach Plum Farm, located just minutes from downtown Cape May, is a working farm that grows over 100 different types of produce as well as chicken, eggs and Berkshire Hogs. They provide fruits, veggies and meats to all the best restaurants in Cape May including The Ebbitt Room, The Blue Pig Tavern and Louisa’s. On this night, we were lucky enough to get a taste of a seasonal, multi-course dinner that highlighted the true meaning of farm-to-table. The Spring Harvest Dinners are held either outside under the stars or inside the hoop house. As the warmer weather tried to break through the chilly last gasps of winter, we dined in the Farm Market, which was transformed from an artisanal goods shop into a cheerful and festive environment for friends old and new to gather. Before the first bite, General Manager Ed Hackett gave me a tour of the grounds. With herb gardens steps away from the kitchen and a fire pit blazing, I knew we were in for a special treat.
Since it was St. Patrick’s Day, we enjoyed a seasonal menu with some fun takes on traditional favorites. Chef Rob Marzinsky designs his menus around what is in-season on the farm and the courses presented to us that night included a huge array of dishes including everything from smoked ham to garden radishes with goat cheese and turnips in a homemade pesto. We shared Irish soda bread with homemade butter, as well as oysters, sea scallops with mushy peas and a dessert topped with fresh whipped cream and caramel sauce that was prepared tableside.
Aside from the amazing meal, the dinner was a wonderful way to relax in nature. This is a fun experience either as a couple or with a group of family and friends. The many courses added up to a very filling meal, which also boasted new tastes and inventive food combinations.
The Spring Harvest Dinners are Fridays & Saturdays now through May and can be reserved online. Dinners are $124 per person (plus tax and gratuity) and include a welcome reception with a cocktail and a multi-course, family-style dinner. There is also a special Mother’s Day Dinner ($95) on Sunday, May 14 from 4-6 pm. Dinners are BYOB and are recommended for guests 21 and up. Due to the nature of the dinner, special dietary requests cannot be accommodated, and the menu is revealed at the table.
Beach Plum Farm is located at 140 Stevens Street, West Cape May 609-459-0121. Guests looking to make a weekend of it can also reserve a cottage for an overnight stay.Â
