Fan conventions are a lot of fun but they can also be loud and overwhelming. A private school in New York City is opening its doors for a comic con that provides a sensory-friendly celebration so that neurodiverse kids can meet their favorite book writers and illustrators.
Gillen Brewer School is a Pre-K to eighth grade school in NYC that serves kids with a broad range of language-based learning disabilities. During its Neurodiversity Comic Con, there will be authors, artists, comics, graphic novels, arts and crafts, cosplay, neurodiverse characters, and games.
Some of the 30 exhibitors include Archie Comics, Scholastic, Mika Song, comedian and author Maysoon Zayid, actor and musician Perry Yung, and artist and writer Ramon Gil. Specific activities include a Rubik’s Cube challenge, adaptive sports and giveaways.
There will be limited capacity, manageable noise level, a Cool Down Room and calming activities.
Neurodiversity Comic Con takes place Saturday, November 9, from 11 am to 4 pm at Asphalt Green, Upper East Side New York, NY. Comic Con is open to the public.
