Meet the Camp

A leading public speaking and debate academy, Bergen Debate offers half- and full-day summer camps for 5th–12th grade students in Bergen and Essex counties. Campers work with dedicated, full-time instructors in engaging morning and afternoon modules that emphasize creative collaboration, thoughtful discussion and skill-building in a fun, supportive environment.

New this summer, Intro to Debate offers a welcoming entry point for 5th–9th grade students who are curious about debate and public speaking. The program helps students find their voice while learning foundational skills that make debate both approachable and rewarding.

“Students come to debate for different reasons,” says Executive Director Sam Azbel. “Our summer programs are designed to introduce students to debate in a structured, supportive way while helping them understand the skills they’re developing and the pathways available as they progress.”

Bergen Debate also offers advanced summer programs for students; the August Intensive Program supports experienced competitors preparing for state- and national-level tournaments, while PF Labs are designed for 7th–9th grade students with prior debate experience planning to compete in the fall. For students not quite ready for debate, a Young Entrepreneurship program blends similar skills with business concepts through Shark Tank–inspired activities. The Model UN program gives beginners exposure to public speaking, advocacy and global issues.

“It’s so rewarding to watch students find their voice, learn to express themselves and come out of their shell while developing skills they can use no matter what they want to do later in life,” Azbel says.
