Manhattan Fencing: A Unique Blend of Fencing and Chess

Meet the Camp

Manhattan Fencing’s summer camp blends world-class coaching in fencing and chess with a genuinely welcoming environment designed specifically for kids. Campers train with Olympic-level coaches and mentors who have guided athletes to national and international success.

BLENDING PHYSICAL SKILLS WITH STRATEGIC THINKING

“We offer a rare blend of fencing and chess, helping kids build not only physical skills like footwork, bladework and bouting, but also strategic thinking, focus and decision-making,” says Julia Gelman, executive director. “We believe fencing truly is physical chess—campers move seamlessly between the strip and the chessboard, learning how to think ahead, recognize patterns and make smart decisions under pressure, both mentally and physically.”

Training is structured yet fun, with games, drills, mock tournaments and age-appropriate sports psychology incorporated into each day to build confidence, resilience and a love for the sport.

“We’re most proud of seeing how fencing becomes a tool for growth beyond the sport itself; campers gain confidence, learn new skills and form real friendships, but they also develop discipline, resilience, focus and the ability to handle challenge and failure,” Gelman says. “These are lessons they carry with them into school—and, later, adult life.”

ACCESSIBLE AND ENGAGING FOR ALL LEVELS

All equipment is provided and activities are designed for ages 7–13; programs are intentionally structured by age, experience and long-term development to make the camp accessible, engaging and developmentally appropriate for every level. The camp fosters a strong sense of belonging by connecting kids to the wider fencing community at every level, as Manhattan Fencing partners with local elementary schools to bring fencing into gym classes and after-school programs so children can discover the sport in an accessible, familiar environment.

“Above all, our camps are known for their friendly, inclusive atmosphere—kids leave not just stronger athletes, but more confident individuals who feel encouraged and supported,” Gelman says. “One of the strongest pieces of feedback we receive is how often campers want to keep fencing after camp ends. Many families transition into our after-school programs and competitive programs because their children fall in love with the sport.”
